VERANDAH REACHES 50 PERCENT SOLD OUT MARK

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 15, 2008) – Verandah, the 1,456-acre community being developed by Bonita Bay Group along a 1.75-mile stretch of the Orange River in Fort Myers, recently sold its 835th home, pushing Verandah’s total to the halfway mark since the community opened for sales in February 2003.
Verandah was designed in harmony with the existing landscape. Bonita Bay Group, which acquired the property in 1999, spent years working and reworking the community’s site plan to fit around existing trees. It spent hundreds of hours weaving neighborhoods, infrastructure and amenities into the site to impact as few trees as possible. Those that were ultimately affected were relocated – a process that took a year. The company also restored a flow way that had been impacted by prior agricultural use, required all single-family model homes be built as green homes and was named Florida’s first Green Development.
Verandah now serves as a role model for green development – reiterated by several state and national environmental awards. The community has received the Florida Association of Realtor’s 2006 Environmental (ENVY) Award; the Council for Sustainable Florida’s 2007 Best Practices Award for green building, the Florida Urban Forestry Council’s Trees Florida 2007 Award, and Project EverGreen’s Because Green Matters Award.
Verandah has also been named by Where to Retire magazine as one of “America’s 100 Best Master-Planned Communities” in 2007 and was named Community of the Year by the Lee Building Industry Association in 2005 and 2008. The Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II co-designed Whispering Oak golf course, which opened in January 2007, was named by Golf Inc. magazine as one of the top five new private courses in the country in 2007.
The Orange River and moss-draped oak trees have become Verandah’s trademark, as has its southern style of architecture, which gives a nod to Old Florida. “We could have gone anywhere but we really wanted a sense of Old Florida,” said Penny. “Golfing was very important to us and so was nature and being surrounded by green. We were also happy about River Village because we didn’t want a big clubhouse.”
River Village, Verandah’s amenities center, was designed to fit within a riverfront hammock of live oaks. Individual buildings – the Golf House pro shop, Boat House, a Tennis and Fitness Center, and the River House restaurant and lounge – limited the impact on the trees. The village also has a community tree house and Oak Park. Last year, the newest community amenity made its debut when Dog Park opened.

Visionary Award as seen in Gulfshore Life

Bonita Bay Group’s Verandah community was named a top five finalist for the 2008 Visionary Award presented by Sustainable Land Development International. The announcement was made during the annual Land Development Breakthroughs conference earlier this month in Austin, Texas. Verandah was the only community in Florida in contention for the honor, which was presented to a community in Colorado. The conference and awards program are designed to promote and recognize sustainable development and improve the land development industry.
